Preserving Iran’s Memory

Iran carries one of the world’s oldest continuous cultural traditions. Its history, literature, science, legends and collective memory reach far beyond the political borders and languages of later centuries.

Through conquest, war, the destruction and loss of libraries, political upheaval and centuries of cultural transformation, parts of Iran’s written heritage disappeared. Other works survived because they were copied, translated, adapted or transmitted through different languages and societies.

Iranian scholars later played a major role in the intellectual life of the wider region — in literature, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, astronomy and the study of language. Knowledge travelled in many directions, and the language in which a later manuscript survives does not by itself establish where its underlying story, idea or tradition first began.

Over time, some Iranian stories and traditions became detached from their earlier context. In popular retellings, later translations were sometimes mistaken for origins.

Chamrosh exists to look beyond the last surviving version — to explore Iran’s history, trace stories back through time, distinguish origin from later transmission, and keep Iranian cultural memory alive for generations to come.
